The movie was too long.  The longer the movie, the fewer the shows
during any given day, and less profit for everybody.  Spielberg wanted
the scene in for the reasons you state but he felt that if they were
going to cut anything, that was it.  Cutting any other expositionary
scene would have made the movie even more nonsensical than it already
is.
