Dinosaur Genera List corrections #91

Today's mail brought the June issue of JVP, which contains the description of
a new dinosaur genus

Shanxia Barrett, You, Upchurch & Burton, 1998

This becomes genus #825 in the list. As soon as I receive the articles
describing the genera Caudipteryx, Ozraptor, and Sonorasaurus, I'll make the
necessary corrections to the list to accommodate them.

The complete citation is:

Barrett, P. M., You H., Upchurch, P. & Burton, A. C., 1998. "A new
ankylosaurian dinosaur (Ornithischia: Ankylosauria) from the Upper Cretaceous
of Shanxi Province, People's Republic of China," Journal of Vertebrate
Paleontology 18(2): 376-384 [June 15, 1998].

The type species is Shanxia tianzhenensis, based on an incomplete skeleton
including partial skull and numerous postcranial elements from the Huiquanpu
Formation (Upper Cretaceous) in Tian Zhen county, Shanxi Province (hence the
derivations of the generic and species epithets). The authors classify this
genus in Ankylosauridae, noting its especially long and slender squamosal
horns.

Two new higher-level sauropod taxa (Macronaria, Somphospondyli) are defined
and diagnosed, and all previous studies of sauropod systematics are reviewed.

This issue of JVP includes three other articles on dinosaurs, as well as one
on proterosuchians in which the author shows that all the Early Triassic South
African proterosuchians are referable to the single species Proterosuchus
fergusi.
