Following on this popular thread thought I'd quote from a letter in New
Scientist last week from Clem Chambers (Clem@aol.com). He was writing in
response to an article "Buried Treasure" 27 June issue which speculated on
what would be left as a reminder of our own species for future
paleontologists. This is only part of the letter :

"Has science ever looked for similar detritus left behind by a "smart
dinosaur" ? On the geological timescale, the gap between humans' invention
of fire and the creation of the nuclear bomb is short, so might it not have
been equally brief for another animal 500 million years ago ? Perhaps gold
deposits such as those discovered in the Yukon are merely the eroded
remains of a dinosaurs' Fort Knox. Are we really the first aggressive,
bipedal, binocular creatures with a claw on the button ?"
