I recall seeing on National Geographic Explorer a few years back about
northern natives recovering mammoth tusks from the ice by using a 55 gal
full of boiling water and applying a nossil to the ground around the embeded
tusk to use steam/water to free the tusk from the ground. They made a
living at selling the ivory in the tusk to the dwendling ivory market (legal
that is). Perhaps this would work in freeing fossils not enclosed by too
much rock.
