Not sure how this impacts the above, but just to add: the Egyptian plover
incubates its eggs through sand.  Probably this is "for" concealment
purposes.  For oviraptor, if intermediate as argued above, it was likely
"for" having greater access to both/either oxygen or parental mediation of
microenvironmental optima.
