New paper

Just wanted to let the gang know of a new paper - or actually 2
comments and one reply - related to the Burke/Feduccia paper on the
developmental implications of fingers in birds related to dino/bird
ancestry. It was mentioned in the 17April1998 issue of Science but is not
in there but off their web site at

www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/280/5362/355a

I'm not sure how I feel about these comments being only there and not
having a publication in the journal itself, at least that I can find nor a page
number listed in the contents page.

THe comments on the paper are by 1) Chatterjee and 2) J.P. Garner and
A.L.R. Thomas and the response is, of course, by Burke/Feduccia and R.
Hinchliffe. The comments basicall say dino/bird relationship no problem
and the reply basically a no way Jose. I printed it directly from the site
and saved the blown up versions of the illustrations, converted them to
Tif and printed them out using Powerpoint. There are basically a million
other options for doing this. I was having trouble getting the blown up
figures to print right directly so jumped a few hoops.

Anyway, I plan to read this weekend and may have something intelligent
to say about them next week some time.
