elephants catching rhinoceroi (or whatever the plural is)

Did the elephants catch the rhinos over a short distance, proving they're 
faster?  (I know rhinos can't run very far because of hyperthermia.)  And could 
you confirm you meant groups of elephants, not of rhinos?
