It is in fact true that crocs are hard pressed to combat mammals after the
initial rush. A few years ago in Natl Goeg a photo showed a huge Nile croc
holding onto the head of a wildebeest half its size. The antelope had
succeeded in resisting being immediately dragged into the river and drowned,
and kept from being dragged in for 20 minutes until more crocs came by and
got it. Both the aerobic and anaerobic power systems of reptiles are very
limited.
