Maybe to catch insects? Learning to flap would be useful in that case.
In most gliders gliding seems to be associated with avoiding 
non-flying predators and softening falls, not with going after moving
food items.

Is there any extant glider that uses gliding to catch its prey? I
remember someone on the list talking about a gliding viverrid
(Darren Naish?).

Change of subject. About the T. rex race don't worry put you money on
"Tim", after seeing Dr. Holtz in action on sbp I'm sure he could easily
dispatch good ol'Rex.
