or -es (long e) or -us (long u), depending on the declension to which the
noun in question belongs.  As was mentioned in another post, however, the
ending on the Greek compounds "platypus" and "octopus" is not the same as the
-us ending in Latin.  (The ending is actually "-s" attached to the root
"pod-"; the long "u" in "pus" is a lengthening of the "o" of the root to make
up for the loss of the "d" before the "-s" ending.  Whew).
