T Holtz explained tis very well in sci.bio.paleontology.

"Robert Bakk..., er, Burke refers to it as "Compsognathus triassicus".
However, there IS no such thing as "Compsognathus triassicus". There
is a dinosaur Compsognathus, with the Late Jurassic species C.
longipes
(and the probably synonym, C. corellestris), and the newly discovered
Early Cretaceous Chinese form Sinosauropteryx prima is also probably
referable to this genus (and thus would be renamed Compsognathus
primus).

There is PROcompsognathus triassicus (which IS the "compy" featured
in the novels). Procompsognathus is a Late Triassic form, a relative
(if not a member) of the Coelophysoidea (the group that contains
Coelophysis, Syntarsus, Elaphrosaurus, and poor old Dilophosaurus
[the form horribly mutated, shrunk, and given a frill and tyrannosaur
jaws into the "Spitter" of Jurassic Park infamy])."

Thus spake T holtz (and I'm posting without asking his permission, but
it does save him from having to retype it again here anyways.....)
