Maybe we can still make it the tail-end and not the leading edge.
We had the megafauna and most of the large island-dwelling mammals and
birds 
-The Great Auk
-Stellar's Sea Cow
-The Dodo
-The Yellow Grizzly (the bear on the flag of California-though I may
have the common name wrong)
-The Giant River Otter of the Pacific Northwest
-The Passenger Pigeon
