Stories and Science Re: Who's next? (was Re: Lost World -SPOILER-)
Never tired of addressing the wall, I'll venture this thought again (not
directed to Tom Holtz but in general)....
Hollywood is engaged (for better or worse) in storytelling. Mr.
Spielberg's motivation as often as not is EMOTION... Which is to say,
what "feels right" as the story progresses. Who can say what moves the
mind of a storyteller? And who can say what the ultimate value of this
is: Enlightenment or Entertainment?
Believe you me, I'm as aware as anyone else what the difference between
science and a story is, but I suspect that there is an apples and
oranges situation here, and there is also a lot of wasted breath
focussed on the idea that something is gonna change Hollywood so that
suddenly over night Jeffrey Katzenburg has a science epiphany and can't
help but make movies about the thrills and chills of sub-atomic physics
without showing a single Hydrogen Bomb!
I'll re-state my offer of helping in the establishment of some
organization which would give a prize for the BEST and WORST that
Hollywood has to offer along the lines of science...
eg... The Archaeopteryx Award for soaring acheivment in science and
either The Piltdown Award or (as a friend from CSICOP suggested) The
Back To The Cave Award for Dishonesty and Stupidity in Science.
It would make a great media event!
