I bet some adapted along some environmental gradient or other to reduce
predation load at this vulnerable time.  Note, though, that these birds
can fly distances that put them out of reach of many that would eat them
or their eggs.  This skill is  a quantum difference when compared to two
non-avian dinosaurs.
Put another way: birds, because they can travel vast distances, can reach
more places with fewer predators.
