I have now read the paper (Cantino et alii, 1997 in Sys. Biol. 46(2))
mentioned in a previous note on this list.

What I saw was a paper that compared phylogenetic taxonomy using the ICBN
rules with phylogenetic taxonomy using the ad hoc rules being developed by
cladists.  I saw *no* comparison of phylogenetic taxonomy with evolutionary
taxonomy - all taxa discussed were strictly monophyletic (sensu Hennig).

Thus the conclusion I read in that paper is that if one is doing
phylogenetic taxonomy one should not use the existing rules of
nomenclature.  I would heartily agree with this.  The two types of taxonomy
require different types of rules.
