The method Allan described for measuring the volume of scale dinosaur models
is workable but rather complex. Me, I just cut up my plasticine half models
and plunk them into a graduated cylinder. It accurately reproduced the mass
of an elephant and rhino. A specific gravity of 1.0 is too high for land
animals, which almost always float. It should be no higher than ~0.95, not
that it makes much difference.
The Brachiosaurus toy model used by Alexander is not accurate and gives too
high a mass for the Berlin specimen it supposedly represents. The mass is
more like 32-35 tonnes.
