This, by the way, happens to be a misconception. It does indeed matter what
misconceptions the average person holds! Think about the consequences of the
fact that a majority of surveyed Americans casually disbelieve evolution and
believe humanity was created by God, for example. Suppose a majority of
people casually thought the earth is being invaded by extraterrestrials.
Wouldn't this matter?
