They were also apparently GREATLY reduced in diversity throughout
most of the Late Cretaceous.

I suspect they might have died out even *without* a major mass
extinction.

My suspicion is that birds were slowly replacing them already long
before the terminal Cretaceous event. (Much as rodents gradually
replaced multutuberculates during the Eocene).
