Simulated responses ;) :
Gregory Paul: Of course they had hair on their chests! All archosaurs had
hair on their chests. It is just as valid to illustrate them with hair as
without!
Tom Holtz: When we consider that pterosaurs, a dinosaurian outgroup, and
one species of dinosaur* had hair, it is likely that hair is plesiomorphic
to the Dinosauria.
)* I don't think TRHJr would refer to this, but bear with me...)
Dinogeorge: Of course! Having descended from birds, all dinosaurs had
hairy chests.
John Bois: Dinosaurs died out because early mammals made nests in their
hairy chests and matted their fur, making them unattractive to the
oppposite sex. Thus females only mated with the less fit bare-chested,
pencil-necked geekasaurs. Birds, with full feathers, didn't have this
problem (we all know that modern mammals don't litterally "feather" their
nests).
Steve Jackson: DARN! Now we have to do the cards over again!
Darrian Nash: (not really a response, just a list of new (and appreciated,
DN) references, and a conference schedule or two)
Rob Meyerson: If Protoceratops had had a hairy chest, it would have
been too easy a target for Velociraptors, because their chests were so
low they'd be weighted down by sand in their hair.
Mickey Rowe: {Moderation Rule 4 specifically prohibits discussion of
chest hair, but I wan't sure about this one. Anyone with comments
should e-mail me... ;-) -MR} [For the record, I did not write any of
this (though I did insert one of the above names because Jonathan
couldn't remember it). -- MR]
Nick Pharris or Jonathan Wagner: Does anyone want to see my
(sauropod/theropod respectively) cladeogram? Hair? Pardon?
:)
