Re: Bio request - Dan Lipkowitz
Well, I've been lurking here for a couple of years. I've occasionally
posted, but in general tend to hold back since I'm still in
data-collection phase and tend to trip myself up more often than not
when trying to answer a question. I'm 21, a junior at the University
of Chicago, biology major (we don't have paleo-specific undergraduate
majors here). I became obsessed with dinosaurs around the same time
most of us probably did -- at the age of two or three. I simply never
outgrew it. I take as many paleo-related courses as I can juggle
during the academic year, and I've spent the last four summers
alternating between volunteer work at the American Museum of Natural
History in New York (a convenient workplace, since I live across the
street) and dinosaur (plus the occasional paleoarchaeological) digs in
Montana with the Museum of the Rockies and affiliated researchers.
I'm not yet certain what I'll be doing this summer; I pulled my calf
on a spring break trip to Texas with Paul Sereno and I'm not sure how
much hiking I'll be up for over the next few months. I am currently
just starting my hunt for graduate schools with decent vertebrate
paleontology majors (suggestions welcome!), having procrastinated far
too long on the matter. I may simply remain at U. Chicago, but it's
always a good idea to have alternatives. My unexpected but nonetheless
ego-boosting primary contribution to the field so far has been an
educational placemat with dinosaur illustrations (which replaced the
company's original, unresearched mat; please don't confuse the two!)
and a forthcoming coloring version of the same. I also researched and
illustrated a dinosaur booklet for school groups for the AMNH, a
packet intended to be made available when the dino halls reopened, but
the staff member in charge of the project left the museum and they
never printed the thing. I'm hoping to eventually be able to publish
something vaguely scientific; I never thought my dino art would be
printed before I had the chance to work on a publication!
