     The fellow that was discussing this with me was named (Darell?  
     Darren?) Tanke, and HE said Phil Currie and he were pretty sure this 
     animal had the eye rot out while it was alive.  And it was apparently 
     killed in the flood waters while trying to cross a river with the rest 
     of the herd.

It would be very interesting to know if that ``eye infection" was a 
premortem feature or a postmortem one.  The only way to be certain that 
the animal did not die from the infection is to see some healing around 
the infected spot.  From Betty's description, that does not seem to be the 
case.  Postmortem damage could look very similar, and it is know to cause 
bone dissolution.  In a mass death assemblage, rotting carcasses and 
dissolving bone would be likely just because not all the organic matter 
would have been eaten before putrification set in.
