Having had several bats in the house for a drawing session last year, I can
say that bats walking with their tummies on the ground are merely nervous
bats. (sucking ground and pretending they are part of the floor). We had
perfectly happy bats with a very erect 45 degree body positioning (Pallid
Bat, Little Brown Bat, and Mexican Free-Tail). Except for scale, you could
have rolled a marble completely under these guys, (only the marble would have
been as big as the Mexican Free-tail's whole upper torso). Perhaps the
fruitbats have a different body position when locomoting, but THESE guys
lifted their bodies off the ground. Any lizard could give you as much
clearance.
