Fossil Replica List

A few months ago I requested names and addresses of companies, museums,
institutions, etc. that sell fossil replicas. I thought at the time
that the list should include *ONLY* replica suppliers, however in hind
site maybe we should include actual fossil suppliers as well. My
feelings are and were that real fossils belong in places where they can
be studied, but I admit that others are entitled to their own opinions
and should be afforded that option.

A fellow subscriber requested that I share my findings with the group,
so here is what I've compiled so far. There *MUST* be many more, so
please feel free to add to the list. Maybe we could include a master
list in the FAQ at some point. Lastly, thank you Jason, Phillip,
George, Joel, William, and Jim for your replies and contributions.

If you write out here (South Dakota School of Mines and Technology) I
know the museum sells replicas of bones. I'm now enrolled in a class
where we will be finishing up 2 scenes of taphonomy. Of course, it
wasn't found this way, but we're making it look real by taking casts of
bones and placing in a fashion so it will look real. The address for
the school is:

South Dakota School of Mines and Technology
          501 East St. Joseph St.

The stuff can be expensive, but the casts are exact replicas.
Some of the stuff will blow you away.

Timeline Rare Artifact and Fossil Reproductions, Ltd. of Surrey, British
Columbia produce a limited number (at this time) of some 30 specimens
reproduced from either book photographs and sculpted or cast from
original or non-copyrighted copies.

These copies include Archaeopteryx lithographica (Berlin), Pterodactyl
kochi, a baby (Post-embryonic) Maiasaur, T.rex teeth, etc. etc.

Not blowing our horn too much but our staff includes a noted Canadian
sculptor, a very highly qualified fossil preparator formerly of the
Royal Tyrrell Museum and myself, a former (now retired)VPaleo
researcher/lecturer.

A very good source for fossil reproductions is :
Mary Odonel is the owner, and has been making fossil reproductions for
many years, her work is very high quality, and affordable. I have
purchased many of her specimens over the last twenty years, and I have
always been fully satisfied. Other companies that I have used have
been more expensive, and sometimes the reproductive quality is not
their. Some of the cast you receive are casts in plaster, which tends
to chip. Resin casts are the way to go, since they are more durable,
and capture fossil details better.

Hi Greg!
I hope that you don't mind this direct email response to your "Fossil
replica" posting in the paleo newsgroup. Until recently, I was a
partner in a fossil replica company. Although a prior business
commitment was the main factor in leaving, I am still collecting
reproductions as a hobby. I too have the raptor claw, plus an amazing
Deinonychus tooth. I also have many others and the collection is
growing constantly! (I am currently trying to get a cast of 3
ceolocanths and 24 mosasaur caudal vertebra) I am willing to share
molding technique in order to trade specimens with other collectors. If
this sounds interesting, or if you just want to talk dinosaurs please
email me jblair@Direct.ca.

I have a Deinonychus claw from Skull Duggery. I ordered their catalog
and they sell many other neat looking replicas.
