stegos

While I appreciate the answers to the thagomizer half of my question, can
(will/could/might) anyone answer the other half, namely provide me with a
rough history of the stego family? I was wondering whether the spikey
forms came 1st, and evolved into the plated forms, whether they occurred
at the same time, or what?

As long as we're also on sauropods--what are people's opinions regarding
the hind-leg balancing poses sauropods seem to frequently be posed in
today (JP's Brachiosaurus, AMNH's Barosaurus, pictures in several books)?
Is this really likely considering this group's weight, and the fact that
their necks could already reach quite high into the trees?
