Re: popular names
In the ICZN 1961 version (now superceded), which I think applies to
the Apatosaurus/Brontosaurus story, states in section VI, article 23 -
Law of priority. -' The valid name of a taxon is the oldest available
name applied to it (...) provided that the name is not invalidated by
any of the provisions of this Code or has not been supressed by the
Commission.'
It goes on to say (Sec. VI, Art. 23 b. Limitation) 'A name that has
remained unused as a senior synonym in the primary zoological
literature for more than fifty years is to be considered a forgotten
name (nomen oblitum)' and (part ii) 'A nomen oblitum is not to be
used unless the Commission so directs.'
I think that this rule has been deleted from the more recent ICZN
volume.
