FICTION: Fossils are rare, or if not all fossils, certainly vertebrate
fossils are rare.
FACT: Dr. Charles Love, geologist from Western Wyoming College, quoted
in a 1993 AP article estimated that "just one-half mile layer[of the
Green River Formation] ...contained 12 billion fish[vertebrate fossils].
"That's enough" he said "to give two [fossil fish] to every person on
the planet."
Is that referring to a layer half a mile thick, which would presumeably
have a much greater horizontal extent? Or does "half a mile" refer to a
horizontal distance?
