USGS safe (for now)....

        Now that the USGS seems safe for this year, it's time for
        you USGSers out there to take a page from the Department
        of Defense and let the world know what good things you're
        doing for them, how it impacts their pocketbook in all 435
        Congressional districts, and generally increase the level
        of awareness in the community. You might start this by
        issuing press releases at a level the general public can
        comprehend (it appears that, except for NPR, this level
        is 8th grade).

        Failure to raise knowledge of the benefits of governmentally
        sponsored geology will result in it's elimination, probably
        at the hand of some other bureaucracy struggling for survival
        ("red in tooth and claw"!!)
