Dinosaur Embryo in Fossil Egg Found
BEIJING (Reuter) - Chinese scientists have photographed a dinosaur embryo
inside a prehistoric fossilized egg, Xinhua news agency said Friday.
Calling the achievement a world first, Xinhua said paleontologists at
Zhengzhou University in central China made the image by scanning the egg with
gamma rays.
An embryonic skeleton is visible in the image, the scientists said.
``The experts say the finding, the first of its kind in the world, will
contribute greatly to the study of the extinct animal,'' Xinhua said.
The egg, dating from the Cretaceous period more than 100 million years
ago, is one of more than 5,000 unearthed in the Henan province county of
Xixia, they said.
Fossilised dinosaur eggs, though protected by Chinese law and prohibited
from export, have become popular items among shoppers at flea markets and
antique shops.
