The disease is called Myxomatosis. We have it in south Sweden too, also
introduced in an attempt to control the rabbit population and cut down on crop
damage. And though the area concerned is very much smaller than the Aussie
outback (Sweden is about the same area as California) we have the same pattern
there: booming populations, epidemic outbreaks, crashes and the a lull of 3--4
years. BTW, the outbreaks do not seem to be coordinated but occur at different
times in different areas.
Myxomatosis is a very nasty thing to inflict on any living being. The entire
head of the animal swells until it is nearly blind; debilitated and dying
bunnies are seen all over the place during the plague outbreaks.
