Researchers at the Ohio State University's Department of Anthropology (Kristen
Gremillion, archaeologist; Douglas Crews, biological anthropologist, and
graduate students) are currently working on extraction of DNA from human
coprolites using phenol chloroform. An immediate goal is to use X and Y loci
to confirm human origin for fragmented material that cannot be
reliably identified on morphological grounds. Sexing of specimens using the
same information is another objective. I am interested in initiating a
dialogue with other researchers working on similar problems (especially
involving coprolites, but more generally any involving ancient DNA).
Information on successes and failures in laboratory procedures are especially
welcomed.
