I don't know why one would assume that theropods would not fall for it.
Mammals and birds fall for it all the time, that is why it (mimicry) is as
prevalent as it is in modern animals (insects, small reptiles). It
certainly is a thought-provoking idea... and sounds perfectly reasonable
to me.
