Polydactyly occurs in many vertebrates, and it is regarded as an abnormality.
I've seen cats with up to seven digits on their forepaws.

The Solnhofen _Archaeopteryx_ is missing a phalanx in one of its toes,
according to Wellnhofer. He considers this an abnormality.
