A good and easily accessable book on the subject of large body size (and 
increasing complexity) through time is John Tyler Bonner's 1988 "The 
Evolution of Complexity_by Means of Natural Selection" published by the 
Princeton University Press. In 250 pages Bonner looks at developmental 
and selective processes that lead towards large body size. He covers a 
lot of ground tying together some of his earlier works and the work of 
others into this over-view of this sexy aspect of evolution. There's lots 
of cool illustrations and graphs.
