The rudists are an odd group of pelecypods (molluscs/clams) which
resemble corals in appearance and were major reef formers in the
Mesozoic. They all died out in the Cretaceous, but before the terminal
event if I remember correctly. Rudist reefs have been major targets
for hydrocarbon exploration over the years.
