But what about sharks eat fish which eat fish which eat plankton which (at
some level)
are dependent upon sunlight for photosynthesis? This would mean that sharks
should
be affected by long periods of darkness.

Perhaps the dependency of some specieds/linneages of sharks on sunlight
somewhere not
too far down the food chain makes them more suseptable than others?
