I have sometimes wondered about this also. Perhaps there was another, early
land mass on the opposite side of the globe (or elsewhere) that was always
separate and evolved it's own critters, then sank into the oceans to be
covered up. Just think what strange land fossils could be under the oceans
(if not subsumed into the mantle).

Anyone else speculated about this?
