As I understand it, the claim is not that all large theropods were
scavengers, but that T. rex was a scavenger (based in part on the
length of its arms, I think). If so, the rest of your argument
fails, since it seems possible that T. rex was scavenging kills
made by other large theropods and occasionally chasing off
smaller theropods. (For comparison, Farley Mowat has documented
that the main prey of wolves in Canada is mice, not moose, caribou,
or other large mammals--main in terms of the percentage of the diet,
not merely that wolves kill more mice than they do caribou--so it's
at least _possible_ for a large carnivore to live on much smaller
prey.)
