SAURIERLAND WESTFALEN:ÂÂWestphaliasaurusÂ

Second episode (in German) of the video series "Westphalia, Land of the Saurians" is about the Lower Jurassic plesiosaur Westphaliasaurus on display at the LWL Museum of Natural History in MÃnster. A free pdf of the original scientific description is at this link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVNQqqE1cSE

The series presenter Fabian discusses the Westphaliasaurus skeleton with paleontologist and museum educator Leonie Schwermann, reviews the history of the find, retrieval, and preparation of the fossil, and then asks if land reptiles developed from aquatic reptiles. The scientist explains that plesiosaurs evolved from land animals, and that plesiosaur paddles are highly modified limbs and digits, similar to the flippers in whales, which also evolved from land animals that returned to the water. The skeleton was missing the skull and the large painted reconstruction on the wall above the skeleton likely went a bit too far in terms of long, sharp teeth in the jaws. A second painting (a bit more realistic) showsÂWestphaliasaurus with its swimming paddles in motion.

The video includes an interview with German paleoartist Joschua KnÃppe, who works at the museum. He discusses the depiction of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals meant to look "cool" (noting the T. rex in Jurassic Park with a constantlyÂopen mouth to expose itsÂteeth, whereas researchers think dinosaurs usually kept theirÂmouths closed just like living animals). He tries to reduce arbitrariness [Beliebigkeit] in the details (in the sense of minimizing personal or idiosyncratic touches) for a more natural and accurate appearance. He shows Fabian the history of ichthyosaurs in paleoart and explains the modern, better understanding of their soft tissues, such as dorsal and tail fins, with recent evidence from biomolecules of a layer of blubber under the skin and a thicker streamlined profile, in contrast to earlier depictions as thinner and "shrink-wrapped" in appearance with the head and neck distinct.
