RE: Japanese tyrannosaurid - 81 mya - so ... ?

Nope; no good mesic dinosaur community of that age currently studied on
mainland Asia.

And keep in mind: Japan IS the mainland. It is not an oceanic island arc (like
the Aleutians). It is a continental volcanic arc, in which the forearc basin
has downwarped and flooded to form the Sea of Japan. Something like Laramidia
and the Western Interior Seaway, only more complicated.
