Moscow/St. Petersburg natural history museum
Dear all,
For some time now, I've been trying to get more information about the
history of natural history museums in Russia in the 20th/21st century.
Sofar I've largely come up empty.
Considering the language gap, two world wars and periods of chaos in
Soviet science, that is not surprising, maybe, but I'm really looking for
something which may shed light on the fate of natural history (and most of
all paleontological) collections in the past century. For instance, much
material was moved from St. Petersburg/Petrograd/Leningrad after the 1917
revolution, but I can't find anything more detailed than that. Also, the
difficult history of the Moscow zoological/paleontological museums (often
closed, stored away in WW2, etc.) doesn't help in clarifying the picture.
The language is not the main problem (I can read some Russian, or have it
translated if I can't), but I won't be able to visit the country in the
forseeable future. In short, all help is greatly appreciated.
Best wishes,
Ilja
