I've just read an article that said the pilot of the show (the first episode) 
was initially special-effects-
heavy, but that it was later re-edited to focus more on the human stories. Damn 
focus groups...

Because of a budget blowout (torrential rains in Queensland were a contributing 
factor), the series 
averages out to about $200,000 per minute of screen time. That's about $1,500 
wasted per blink, 
by my rough estimate.
