On one hand, the bodies seem to be covered in feathers which protect from the 
slashing attacks of rival males  (possibly protecting in concert with a tougher 
skin?)
 
 on the other hand, as great as humans have demonstrated feather armor to be, 
one would think that 22nd Century bullets would be able to at least get a 
little blood coming out)
 
(and on the gripping hand, even when they were firing randomly, they never 
accidentally hit a Slasher's leg, which lacked the feathers and perhaps the 
toughness)

 probably scurried in the opposite direction when they heard the humans 
crashing through the jungle.

 I don't want to know who you have to piss off to be assigned to *that* work 
detail.
