I'm under the impression that the real test is finding fossils with
pertinent characters. Cladistic analyses do seem a good method to
avoid making implicit biases while deciding which phylogenetic
hypothesis is best supported by the current data. Or am I
misapprehending what you wrote?

Not that I haven't entertained the notion of Ornitholestes as a basal
dromaeosaur(id) ever since I noticed it had the incipient sickle claw.
