I pictured _Mahakala_ as possibly using its short wings to help brake its fall 
when descending from trees to the ground - more parachuting than gliding, I 
guess.  Much like the modern kakapo, which also has short wings.

Yep, definitely.  Further, _Hesperonychus_ documents the presence of 
microraptorines in the Late Cretaceous.  So they weren't just a flash in the 
pan.
