Migrating birds are known to lose close to half their body weight on
long crossings. Lots of that difference is fat. It's generally
well-distributed fat (this is why you need a catching pan under the
roast goose while it's roasting) rather than specific fat deposits,
though some birds do have those even in non-domestic varieties.
