So, I'm gathering from the video that a large amount of thrust is generated by the wings along with thrust from the hind limbs. Which seemingly relieves the hindlimbs of a large amount of duty -- which was a major concern of yours.

I'm gathering from recent literature that 90 % and upwards (depending on the species) of the force necessary for takeoff is generated by the hindlimbs in birds. They jump into the air, and when they've arrived up there, they fly away (to oversimplify).
