Re: Cretaceous volcanism

Uncertain how much was volcanism and how much was crashing meteors in Mexico, but I do believe that the most viable theory of why birds selectively survived is their fortuitous location in the southern megacontinent. Australia and Antarctica or something. I don't know how arctc it was (may not have been at that time), but it was somehow geographically protected from the worst of the climactic upset.

How did these events effect dinosaur diversity and global
climatic change?

It might be complicit in the disappearance of some of the minor lineages of "birds". On the whole, IIRC it had little obvious effect on avialan macroevolution.
