SVP Global Climate Change Videos
Now Posted on the SVP Web Site
Today global climate change is altering not only the average global
temperature and length of seasons but also sea level, rainfall, severe
weather events, agricultural productivity, the spread of diseases and
the distribution of plants and animals. Global-change scientists,
including paleontologists, are developing models and acquiring data to
understand the environmental and human consequences of modern climate
change. The fossil record is a critical source of biological and
environmental information for evaluating the effects of climate change
on species, ecosystems and evolutionary processes.
In these three videos from the Climate Forum at the 2008 SVP annual
meeting in Cleveland, three global-change scientists share how insights
from the fossil record for ecological and evolutionary responses of
plants and animals apply to climate changes underway today. The brief
introduction at the beginning of each video is given by Catherine
Badgley, University of Michigan (SVP Past President).
