That we don't do satire? Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show, Wierd
Al, Mystery Science Theater, Venture Brothers, all those (Insert Genre
Here) Movies, etc, etc . . . satire, parody, sarcasm, and outright
mockery all mingle in a complex that permeates (my perception of)
American humor. I'd say it's hard to separate them - they're all part
of the younger generations' tendency toward cynicism regarding the
establishment. We're compelled to mock the traditional values and
styles (although we simultaneously embrace them in many respects. It's
weird).

The Onion, as always, hits the nail on the head here, regarding the
"evolution is just another religion" notion. As the piece makes clear,
evolutionary thought does not inspire acts of fervent, emotional
religious devotion, nor the interpretation of rational phenomena as
"miraculous." Zealotry on the hand, well, that we do see from time to
time, mostly of a reactionary nature . . .

Oh, erm, to steer this away from The Movement Which Shall Not Be
Named, uh, dinosaurs are cool! And so was Darwin, albeit not to the
point of being worthy of worship.
