Science is NOT a four-letter word
A field guide along the lines of what Ian Paulson is looking for
requires and blend of imagination and science. I think this was
wonderfully accomplished with "A Field Guide to Dinosaurs" by Henry Gee
and Luis Rey, Quarto 2003. The authors stated the following:
"We'll finish with a warning to the reader: Those who choose to believe
what follows do so at their own risk. Others will dismiss our
speculations as preposterous and fantastical. And in one sense they
will be absolutely right, for we are willing to bet that the real
dinosaurs of the Mesozoic were not at all like anything you see in these
pages-they were far, far stranger."
More such books about other prehistoric animals, which have a factual
basis, but fill in our huge knowledge gaps with creativity would be very
welcome!
